Language and Cultural Features

The major portion of the population speaks English. Thus English ought to be used in direct marketing.

The United Kingdom, abbreviated UK, consists of four different parts, i.e., England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each with its own culture, history and traditions. Britons is the correct designation for all inhabitants, and it is deemed unforgivable to address a Scott as an Englishman.

The Britons are considered tied to tradition, accommodating, polite and very tolerant of foreign nationals who, however, should have command of the English language.

Laws and Customer Protection - Data Privacy

In addition to various laws in the field of advertising and direct marketing, there are rules of behavior in the direct marketing industry that require compliance. The most significant law is the Data Protection Act of 1984. According to this law, all sets of data containing personal information must, for example, be reported and registered. Please contact the British Direct Marketing Association if you have any questions. The Association's address is provided below.

There is a MPS List (Mailing Preference Service) in Great Britain for persons who do not wish to receive printed advertising. There are also Robinson Lists of persons who do not wish to receive any baby-related advertising, and there are lists against advertising by telephone, facsimile and e-mail.
